Traditional British pub experience

"The Fish And Eels" in Hoddesdon, England, is a charming country inn and restaurant that belongs to the British Vintage Inns chain and has a long history dating back to the early 1800s. Originally owned by the Christie family brewery, it served as a sales outlet for locally brewed beer from Hoddesdon and has evolved over time into a popular riverside meeting spot. The restaurant is picturesque, located by the River Lea near Dobbs Weir, offering an idyllic backdrop appreciated by nature lovers, walkers, and families alike. It combines rustic charm with a welcoming atmosphere, making it a place where guests can enjoy both the tranquility of the surroundings and hearty, seasonal cuisine.

Restaurant by the River Lea

The atmosphere at "The Fish And Eels" is characterized by traditional British pub charm, enhanced by thoughtful details such as crackling fireplace in winter and a spacious garden area in summer. The interior is cozy, featuring a mix of wooden furniture and warm colors that create a homely ambiance. Particularly noteworthy is the large wooden terrace by the river, which becomes a popular spot in nice weather for watching the activity on the water—whether it be ducks, swans, or passing boats. The establishment is dog-friendly and offers ample space for families, including high chairs and wheelchair access. On busy days, such as during Sunday lunches, it can get lively, and the staff is praised for their friendliness and attentiveness, although there may occasionally be minor delays during peak times.

Rustic inn in England

Culinarily, "The Fish And Eels" stands for classic British pub cuisine with a focus on seasonal ingredients and hearty dishes. A highlight is the "Sunday Roast," served with succulent beef or turkey, accompanied by crispy roast potatoes, generous Yorkshire puddings, and rich gravy— a dish that perfectly captures the traditional Sunday meal. Equally popular is the "Cod and Chips," featuring freshly battered cod served with thick-cut chips and creamy tartar sauce, highlighting the river's maritime proximity. The "Beef & Red Wine Lasagna" offers a modern twist on a classic, with tender meat and a deep, flavorful sauce that promises warmth and satisfaction. For dessert, the "Mini Bakewell Sponge Pudding," a small but intense almond-flavored treat served warm with vanilla sauce, provides a sweet conclusion.

The drink selection is equally diverse, featuring a range of carefully curated cask ales that make "The Fish And Eels" a Cask Marque-certified pub, as well as a variety of wines and gins that pair excellently with the dishes. Particularly popular is the locally brewed beer, which reflects the region's tradition, while seasonal cocktails add variety. The restaurant also offers a breakfast menu available daily, as well as the option to order takeout, catering to the needs of modern guests.

Excellent destination pub. Fanatic view by the canal and dog friendly. Food was reasonably priced and quality is of a good standard. Well worth a visit even just for a few drinks or coffee by the canal.

The patio by the river is a lovely spot for a beer. Unfortunately I can't rate any higher as our food was really bad. One of the worst fish and chips I ever had. Portion size was really small at £17, about 10 chips with a small spoon of mushy peas and a very thin piece of fish. Both fish and chips were very over cooked. Would come back for a beer but for food it's a no.

Food was shockingly bad! Small portions and expensive for what you get! Shame as it's lovely inside just wouldn't eat there! Think they need a better chef!

This dog friendly place has got worse since I went last. In short the mains and dessert took too long to be served. The desert order was messed up with tea and coffee served 15 mins before dessert arrived even though we prompted the staff only 2 out of the 3 orders were actually delivered to our table. It's a great place to meet, eat, have a chat with friends but the poor service spoils it somewhat.

Came to visit today, had the loveliest time being looked after by Nat and Chloe. We just had some bar snacks whilst sitting in the sun. A plus side for little ones, they sell duck food to feed the ducks on the river!

Disappointing. A good bottle of Gavi. Two decent starters. Both main courses were unacceptably not as described on the menu. One meal unexpectedly included a pile of shredded raw pickled onion in vinegar, on top of some vinegar soaked rocket leaves instead of "a green salad". The other had a few plain boiled new potatoes instead of dauphinoise, with very overcooked and badly drained green beans. We did not eat the food and asked for both items to be removed from the bill, which took ages. We had asked for a second bottle of wine but it never arrived. Very disappointing.

Four of us enjoyed a lovely meal at the Fish and Eels. Everything about the visit was enjoyable, the staff, the food, the service, the venue, and the ambience of the place is really good. I am a senior citizen and I had a fall, and the staff could not have been more helpful and caring. Will, the guy who helped me up performed over and above his duty in looking after me, I amnot a small guy, but Will came to my aid instantly and helped me up, Without any concern about his own wellbeing, so thank you son, I really did appreciate everything you did for me. It was such a breath of fresh air to find such a lovely place with lovely staff, thank you all very much. We look forward to returning soon
